The Heart of Teaching:
Michael Houston on Community, Connection, and Change

Michael Houston, a dedicated math teacher at St. Paul Harding High School, recently celebrated 20 years in the profession. Although he fell into teaching by accident, he found his passion for education through his love of math and the guidance of mentors like his college professor, Dr. Krueger.

Michael emphasizes the importance of community building in the classroom, creating a space where every student feels valued and supported. His innovative approach includes integrating financial literacy into his math curriculum, making the subject relevant and engaging for students. Named Minnesota’s 2023 Teacher of the Year, Michael Houston continues to inspire by fostering confidence and belonging in his students.

“It wasn’t until I did some self-reflection after I was named Teacher of the Year that community was the sole reason for that I was able to get to where I am today.”
