2025 Diversity in STEM Education Summit

Are you ready to lead the charge in creating a more diverse and inclusive STEM teaching workforce?

Join us for the 2025 Diversity in STEM Education Summit from March 21 – 23, 2025 in Washington, DC, where we’ll come together to tackle underrepresentation in STEM teaching. Since 2017, the Smithsonian Science Education Center has hosted this annual summit, helping over 130 teams develop strategies to create more inclusive hiring and retention practices that increase the representation of educators from diverse backgrounds in STEM classrooms.

About the Diversity in STEM Education Summit

The Smithsonian Science Education Center’s Diversity in STEM Education Summit: Building a Coalition for Attracting and Retaining a Diverse STEM Teaching Workforce is part of an ongoing initiative that began in 2015, aimed at transforming the STEM teaching workforce through systems change. The Summit focuses on implementing systemic change in schools, districts, and on the state level. By participating in the Summit, you’ll contribute to a nationwide effort to diversify STEM education while gaining the tools and support to drive change in your community.

What to Expect

At the Summit, 15 teams of educators will work as change agents, crafting action plans to attract and retain STEM teachers from underrepresented populations at school, district, and state levels. Each team is paired with a mentor who offers guidance and expertise, ensuring teams have the support they need throughout the next school year as they implement their strategies.

Become a Mentor
Mentors bring rich experience from various roles in STEM and education, such as nonprofit leaders, veteran teachers, and university professors. They support teams by providing valuable feedback and guiding them toward achieving their goals. Interested in being a mentor?

 

Mentor applications are due Friday, December 13, 2024, at 5:00 PM Eastern.

 

Who Should Apply?

Teams should include:

  1. School or district administrators

  2. In-service STEM teachers

  3. Human resources administrators

  4. Science education leaders

  5. Community partners or parents

Why Attend?

By attending the Summit, the selected teams will have the opportunity to:

  1. Develop a logic model to address recruitment and retention challenges for a more diverse STEM teacher workforce.

  2. Collaborate with peers to share best practices for boosting diversity in STEM education.

  3. Join a national network committed to equitable pathways in STEM teaching.

  2. Pre-Summit Webinars: Thursday, February 20, March 6, and March 13, 2025 (5:30PM-7:00PM Eastern)

  3. Mentor Training: Tuesday, February 11, and March 11, 2025 (Time TBD) 

  4. Summit Dates/Location: March 21–23, 2025 in Washington, D.C.
